David Haynes

Executive Manager, Policy & Research

David is Executive Manager, Policy & Research at AIST, where he has spent the last few years immersed in the development and implementation of Stronger Super initiatives, especially MySuper and SuperStream.

David has been working for profit-to-member super since 1987 when he spent almost a decade as a trustee of a fund which is now part of UniSuper. Since then, David has been an account manager in superannuation administration provider AAS, and chief executive of the leading eligible rollover fund, AUSfund. 

More recently, David spent 6 years as the general manager of Industry Fund Services, where he was responsible for financial planning, credit control, insurance broking, income stream products, eligible rollover fund, and managed fund businesses. He was also on the executive team of Members Equity.  As a trustee of two superannuation funds, he had a decision-making role on investment & fund governance matters.

Karen Volpato

Senior Policy Advisor

Karen is AIST’s Senior Policy Advisor. In this capacity, Karen manages AIST’s strategic research framework and projects.

Karen’s previous roles included Marketing Manager of First State Super, where Karen was responsible for marketing, policy, corporate affairs and product. In this role, Karen oversaw the marketing rollout of First State Super becoming a public offer fund as well as the merger with Health Super.

Karen has extensive experience in the banking and superannuation industry, and has a legal background.

Karen has in the past been voted as Selecting Super’s Superannuation Marketer of the Year.

Richard Webb

Policy & Regulatory Analyst

Richard Webb is the AIST’s Policy & Regulatory Analyst. Richard has been with AIST for eight years, having also worked in AIST’s Education and Governance departments.

His time at AIST has built a deep understanding of the complex issues in superannuation policy and the diverse needs of AIST members. Richard has an active role in developing and implementing AIST’s policy and government relations strategy, participating in parliamentary inquiries, Government committees and consultations involving Treasury and regulators. He also leads the formulation of AIST policy submissions and coordinates the activities of AIST’s Policy & Governance Committee.

Richard has 20 years’ experience within financial services. Prior to joining the AIST, he worked in technical roles with a number of organisations including Superpartners, AXA and the Commonwealth Bank.

Richard holds a Bachelor of Commerce, a Graduate Diploma in Applied Finance, a Diploma in Financial Planning, and is currently completing a Master of Applied Finance. He also plays trombone in 2 ½ bands when he’s not studying.
